My Washington vacation was to be the final highlight of my time with the German armed forces in
North America, because I flew back less than a week afterwards, for my duty time ended.
Actually, my hotel was not located in Washington itself, but in nearby Herndon / Virginia. From
there, I did several journeys with a rented car. I didnīt, however, restrict myself to Washington
alone, but I also went to Arlington / Virginia where the Arlington National Cemetery is located,
and to Manassas / Virginia, where the first battle of the America Civil War was fought in 1861.
Today, the battlefields of 1st and 2nd Bull Run (1861 and 1863) are outdoor museums.
My primary focus, however, was directed at Washington, the capital of the USA (not to be confused
with the state of Washington, which is located in the Northwest of the USA). Apart from doing the
usual sightseeing, I also visited the Smithsonian Museums, for example the National Museum of
Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum.
